Ravanala madagascariensis (Strelitziaceae)

വാഴയാണോ അതോ പനയാണോ എന്ന് സംശയം തോന്നിക്കുന്ന ഒരു മരം നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലുണ്ട്. കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ?

മഡഗാസ്കർ സ്വദേശിയായ ഈ വൃക്ഷം ഒരു പനയേ അല്ല. മറിച്ച് വാഴയുടെ അടുത്ത കുടുംബക്കാരനാണ്.

മൂന്ന് മീറ്ററോളം നീളമുള്ള, വാഴയുടേത് പോലുള്ള ഇലകളും, പനയുടേത് പോലുള്ള തടിയുമായി ഈ കൂറ്റൻ വൃക്ഷം ഒറ്റനോട്ടത്തിൽ ആരുടെയും ശ്രദ്ധ ആകർഷിക്കും.

ഇലപ്പോളകളിൽ (leaf sheaths) ശേഖരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മഴവെള്ളം പലപ്പോഴും ദാഹിച്ചുവലഞ്ഞ വഴിയാത്രക്കാർ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ യാത്രക്കാരുടെ പന എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു.

ഇലകളുടെ വിന്യാസം പൊതുവേ കിഴക്കു- പടിഞ്ഞാറായിട്ടാണ് എന്നതിനാൽ, യാത്രികർ ദിശ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ വേണ്ടിയും ഈ വൃക്ഷത്തെ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. കിഴക്കു-പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ പന (East-West palm)  എന്ന് ഇതിനെ വിളിക്കുന്നതും അതുകൊണ്ടാണ്.

നമ്മുടെ മിക്ക ഉദ്യാനങ്ങളിലും ഈ വൃക്ഷത്തെ കാണാവുന്നതാണ്.

Ravenala madagascariensis, which is a native of Madagascar is not a true palm, but belongs to the Bird-of-paradise family, which is more closely related to the Banana family.

It has a trunk which may reach upto 30 m tall (Bemavo variety) and the large paddle-shaped leaves, having the appearance of a fan, may reach upto 3 m in length.

It has been given the name Traveller’s palm because the sheaths of the stems hold rainwater, which supposedly could be used as an emergency drinking supply for needy travellers. It is also called East-West palm since the fan shaped leaves tends to grow on an east–west line, providing a crude compass.
