കിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളായ ചൈന, കൊറിയ, ജപ്പാൻ, റഷ്യയുടെ കിഴക്കൻ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കുഞ്ഞു സസ്യമാണിത്.

വിരിയാനുള്ള പ്രായമാകുമ്പോഴേക്കും പൂവിന്റെ കൂടിച്ചേർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്ന അഞ്ചിതളുകളും വീർത്തു വായു നിറഞ്ഞ് ഒരു നീല ബലൂൺ പോലെയാകുന്നു. പൗരാണിക ചൈനയിൽ വ്യാപകമായി പ്രചാരത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന സംഗീതം പൊഴിക്കുന്ന പിച്ചള മണികളുടെ രൂപം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ഇതിനു ‘ചൈനീസ് മണി‘ എന്ന പേര് കൂടി ഉണ്ട്‌ കേട്ടോ.

Platycodon grandiflorus is a herbaceous plant of the family Campanulaceae and is the only member of the genus. It is native to East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East).

The blue flower buds swell like a balloon before it opens fully, hence commonly known as Balloon flower.

It is also called as Chinese bell flower since the petals are fused together to form a bell shape at the base.
