Palicourea elata (Rubiaceae)

ലിപ്സ്റ്റിക്കിട്ട ചുണ്ടുകളെ പോലെയുള്ള പുഷ്പ ഭാഗവുമായി ഒരു സസ്യം ഉണ്ട്. അറിയുമോ?

മധ്യ – ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ നിത്യ ഹരിത വനങ്ങളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ സസ്യം നമ്മുടെ തെച്ചി, കാപ്പി, വെള്ളില, മുസാണ്ട എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന Rubiaceae കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെടുന്നതാണ്

മനുഷ്യന്റെ ചുണ്ടുകൾ  പോലിരിക്കുന്ന ചുവന്ന സഹപത്രങ്ങൾ (bracts) ആണ് ഇതിനെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാക്കുന്നത്. ഉള്ളിലുള്ള വെളുത്ത പൂക്കളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുകയും, പൂവിതളുകൾ ചെയ്യുന്ന പോലെ പരാഗണത്തിന് പ്രാണികളെ ആകർഷിക്കുകയുമാണ് ധർമ്മം.

മനുഷ്യന്റെ ചൂഷണവും, പരിസ്ഥിതിനാശവും കാരണം ഈ സസ്യം ഇന്ന് വംശനാശത്തിന്റെ ഭീഷണിയിലാണ്.

Palicourea elata, formerly Psychotria elata, commonly known as Girl friend kiss  is a tropical plant of the family Rubiaceae, that ranges from Central to South American rain forests in countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia.

It is most notable for its distinctly shaped red bracts and is consequently nicknamed “Hot Lips”.

Though the bright red bracts are considered its most flashy feature, they are not the actual flowers of the plant but instead extravagant leaves; the flowers of lie within the “red lipped” leaves.

The plant has now become endangered due to deforestation in its native range and also due to over exploitation, since it has been widely used as a gift for Valentine’s Day.
