Buddleja globosa (Scrophulariaceae)

മധുരപലഹാരമായ ലഡ്ഡുവിന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ ഒരു ‘പൂവ്’ ഉണ്ട്. അറിയുമോ?

ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളായ ചിലിയിലും അർജന്റീനയിലും മാത്രം (endemic) കാണുന്ന ഈ സസ്യത്തിന്റെ ഓരോ പൂക്കുലയും (പൂവ് എന്നു കരുതുന്നത് ഒരു പൂക്കുലയാണ് കേട്ടോ) ഓറഞ്ച് നിറത്തിൽ ഗോളാകൃതി ഉള്ളതാണ്. 3 സെന്റീമീറ്റർ വരെ വ്യാസം വെയ്ക്കുന്ന ഇവ നമുക്കേവർക്കും സുപരിചിതമായ ലഡ്ഡുവിനെ പോലിരിക്കുന്നു. മാത്രമല്ല, തേനിന്റെ കൊട്ടാരമാണ് ഓരോ പൂവും..!!

ഇങ്ങിനെ നിരവധി ലഡ്ഡുക്കൾ ചേർന്നതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ വലിയ പൂക്കുല. പൂക്കൾ ആൺ-പെൺ വ്യത്യാസമുള്ളതാണ് (unisexual).

പല രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേക്കും എത്തിപ്പെട്ട ഇത്, അനേകം അവാർഡുകൾ വാരിക്കൂട്ടിയ ഒരു ഉദ്യാന സസ്യം കൂടിയാണ്.

Buddleja globosa, also known as the Orange-ball-tree is a large shrubby plant endemic to Chile and Argentina.

The species was first described and named by Hope in 1782. It was first introduced to the United Kingdom from Chile in 1774, and is now commonly grown as an ornamental and landscape shrub in temperate regions.

The globose inflorescence is having a diameter from 1.5 – 3 cm and it resembles the sweet Orange laddu popular in our country.

The plant was accorded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award Garden Merit  in 1993.
