Osteospermum ecklonis Variety – Whirlygig (Asteraceae)

പൂക്കൾക്കിടയിലെ ഒരു ക്ലോക്കിനെ നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം.

Osteospermum (ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ഡെയ്സി) എന്ന പേരിൽ സുപ്രസിദ്ധമായ, കിഴക്കൻ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലും, ദക്ഷിണ അറേബ്യയിലും ജന്മദേശമുള്ള മനോഹരങ്ങളായ ഉദ്യാനസസ്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്.

അവയിലെ ecklonis എന്ന സ്പീഷീസിന്റെ  സങ്കര ഇനമായ (hybrid) Whirlygig ന് ഇതളുകൾ എല്ലാം സ്പൂൺ ആകൃതിയിലാണ്. ഒറ്റനോട്ടത്തിൽ കണ്ടാൽ നമ്മുടെ ക്ലോക്ക് പോലിരിക്കും.

ഇതളുകളുടെ സ്പൂൺ ആകൃതി കൊണ്ട് ഇതിനെ സ്പൂൺ ഡെയ്സി എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് കേട്ടോ.

Osteospermum (African Daisy) are beautiful herbs belonging to the Sunflower family, Asteraceae with about 70 species native to southern and eastern Africa & Arabian peninsula.

The scientific name is derived from the Greek osteon (bone) and Latin spermum (seed).

Most cultivated varieties are the hybrids of Osteospermum jucundum, O. grandiflorum and O. ecklonis. Whirlygig variety is a hybrid of O. ecklonis with spoon shaped ray florets, which differ from the normal ones, hence gives the appearance of a Clock. Hence it is also called as Spooned Daisy.
