Couroupita guianensis (Lecythidaceae)

പീരങ്കിയുണ്ടകൾ പോലത്തെ വലിയ കായ്കൾ ഉള്ള ഒരു മരം നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലുണ്ട്. ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ?

മധ്യ-ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ വംശജനായ ഈ വൃക്ഷം അതിന്റെ മനോഹരങ്ങളായ പൂക്കളും, കൗതുകമാർന്ന കായ്കളും കാരണം ലോകത്തിന്റെ പലഭാഗങ്ങളിലും നട്ടുവളർത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.

മരത്തടിയിൽ നിന്ന് നേരിട്ട് കുലകളായി വളരുന്ന വലിയ പൂക്കൾക്ക് പിങ്കും ചുവപ്പും കലർന്ന നിറമാണ്. ധാരാളം കേസരങ്ങൾ ഉള്ളതിൽ ചിലവ നടുക്കു വൃത്താകൃതിയിലും, ബാക്കി മുന്നോട്ട് വളർന്നു ഒരു പാമ്പിന്റെ പത്തിപോലെയും നിൽക്കുന്നു. ഇക്കാരണത്താൽ ഇവയെ നാഗഫണം / നാഗലിംഗപുഷ്പം എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു.

10 ഇഞ്ചോളം വ്യാസമുള്ള ബ്രൗൺ നിറമുള്ള പരുപരുത്ത വലിയ കായ്കൾ കണ്ടാൽ പീരങ്കിയുണ്ടകൾ ആണെന്നേ തോന്നൂ. 100-500 വിത്തുകൾ വരെ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഇവ പക്ഷേ നാറ്റമുള്ളതിനാൽ ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമല്ല.

Couroupita guianensis,  is a deciduous tree which is native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. It is cultivated in many tropical countries including India, because of its beautiful, fragrant flowers and large, interesting fruits.

The flowers are so big, pink & strongly scented, in long racemes. Stamens are plenty, which are arranged as a ring in the centre and also on a curved hood like structure, which resembles the hood of a Cobra, hence the name Nagalinga maram.

The fruits are spherical with a woody shell and reach diameters of up to 25 cm (10 inches), which give the species the common name “Cannonball tree“.
