Rafflesia arnoldii (Rafflesiaceae)

ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പൂവിന്, ചീയുന്ന മാംസത്തിന്റെ രൂക്ഷഗന്ധമാണെന്ന് അറിയുമോ?

സുമാത്രയിലെയും ബോർണിയയിലെയും മഴക്കാടുകളിൽ മാത്രം കാണുന്ന ഈ അപൂർവ സസ്യം Tetrastigma എന്ന വള്ളിച്ചെടിയുടെ വേരിൻമേൽ വളരുന്ന ഒരു പൂർണപരാദ സസ്യം ആണ്.

ഇതിന് പറയത്തക്കതായി ഇലയും, തണ്ടും, വേരും ഒന്നുമില്ല. ചെടി ദൃശ്യമാകുന്നതു തന്നെ വലിയ മുകുളങ്ങൾ രൂപപ്പെട്ടു വരുമ്പോഴാണ്. ഒരു മീറ്ററോളം വ്യാസവും 10 കിലോയിലധികം ഭാരവും വരുന്ന ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഈ പൂക്കളിൽ ആണും പെണ്ണും വെവ്വേറെയാണ്. Bluebottle Carrion fly എന്ന ഈച്ചകൾ ആണ് ഇതിന്റെ പരാഗണം നടത്തുന്നത്. ‘ചീഞ്ഞഴുകിയ മാംസത്തിന്റെ (Carrion) ഗന്ധമാണ്’ പൂവിലേക്ക് ഈച്ചകളെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നത്.

ഇൻഡോനീഷ്യയുടെ ദേശീയ പുഷ്പങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്.

Rafflesia arnoldii is a root parasitic species belonging to the family Rafflesiaceae which is native to the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo.

The plant lacks any observable leaves, stems or even roots, and does not have chlorophyll and lives as a holoparasite on the vines of another plant Tetrastigma. It is noted for producing the largest individual flower on Earth which grows to a diameter of around one meter (3.3 feet), weighing up to 11 kilograms..!!

The reddish-brown unisexual flowers have a strong and unpleasant odor of decaying flesh, which gives it the name as Carrion flower.
