Amorphophallus titanum (Araceae)

ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ശാഖകളില്ലാത്ത പൂക്കുലയ്ക്ക്, ചീയുന്ന ശവത്തിന്റെ മണമാണെന്ന് അറിയുമോ?

സുമാത്രയിലെ ഈ സ്ഥാനീയ (endemic) സസ്യം നമ്മുടെ ചേനയുടെ ജനുസ്സിൽ പെടുന്നതാണ്. 3 മീറ്ററിലധികം ഉയരം വയ്ക്കുന്ന ശാഖകളില്ലാത്ത ഇതിന്റെ പൂക്കുല, ലോകത്തിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും വലുതാണ്. 50-150 കിലോ ഭാരം വെയ്ക്കുന്ന ഇതിന്റെ ‘ചേനയും’ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലുതാണ്.

ഉള്ളിൽ ബ്രൗൺ നിറമുള്ള ഒരു വലിയ പാളയ്ക്കു (spathe) അകത്തു നിന്ന് ഉയർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്ന ഈ പൂക്കുലയ്ക്ക് ചീയുന്ന ശവശരീരങ്ങളുടെ രൂക്ഷഗന്ധമാണ്. അതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ ജഡ പുഷ്പം എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.

ഈയിടെ വയനാട്ടിലുള്ള ‘ഗുരുകുല ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ സാങ്ച്വറിയിൽ’ ഇതു വിരിഞ്ഞതായി വാർത്തയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

Amorphophallus titanum, (Titan arum), is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world (upto 3 m tall), which is endemic to Sumatra. However, it is seen cultivated here in some gardens also (eg. Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary, Wayanad).

The popular name “Titan Arum” was coined by W.H. Hodge. Due to its odor, like that of a rotting corpse, the Titan arum is also known as the Corpse flower. The flower remains open for only 48 hours.

The corm of this plant is the largest known corm, weighing from 50 -150 kg.
