Aristolochia salvadorensis, nicknamed the Darth Vader Flower, is an alien-looking shrub native to Central and South America. It thrives at low elevation in the warm, humid climate of the rainforests in countries like Brazil, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

The weird, corpse-like appearance of the flowers, which resemble Darth Vader, a fictional character in the Star Wars is due to adaptations that ensure its survival. The helmet-like shape (calyx), luminous ‘eyes’ and purple coloration of the flowers, combined with the powerful aroma of rotting flesh, tends to attract insect pollinators.
