Calathea crotalifera (Marantaceae)

Rattle snakes ന്റെ നാടായ അമേരിക്കയിൽ, അവയുടെ ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വാലറ്റത്തുള്ള ശൽക്കങ്ങളെ (rattle) അനുസ്മരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സസ്യമുണ്ട്. അറിയുമോ?

ഇഞ്ചിയുടെയും കൂവയുടെയും അടുത്ത ബന്ധുവായ ഈ സസ്യം പ്രധാനമായും മധ്യ-ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലാണ് കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. പടർന്നു വളരുന്ന ഈ ചെടി മൂന്നു മീറ്ററോളം ഉയരം വെയ്ക്കും.

ഇവയുടെ മഞ്ഞയും ഓറഞ്ചും നിറമുള്ള പൂക്കുലകൾക്കാണ് Rattle snakes ന്റെ വാലറ്റത്തോട് (rattle) സാമ്യമുള്ളത്. അടുക്കടുക്കായി ക്രമീകരിച്ച ഇവയുടെ മാംസളങ്ങളായ സഹപത്രങ്ങളാണ് (bracts) ഈ പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഇവയ്ക്ക് ഉള്ളിൽ നിന്നാണ് പൂക്കൾ പുറത്തേക്ക് തലയിട്ട് നോക്കുന്നത്. മുട്ടയുടെ ആകൃതിയിലുള്ള കായ്കൾക്കുള്ളിൽ വെളുത്ത മാംസളമായ ആവരണത്തോടെ കടുംനീല നിറത്തിലുള്ള വിത്തുകളും കാണാം.

Calathea crotalifera is a  rhizomatous perennial garden plant native to Mexico, Central America, and South America.

It grows up to 3 m in height, forming dense tufts and produces unique inflorescences on a 1 feet long stalk. The inflorescences consist of stacked leathery floral bracts which resembles a great deal like a Rattlesnake’s rattle.

Flowers are small, yellow or yellow-orange peeking out at the edges of these bracts. The seed capsules are egg-shaped which contain dark blue seeds surrounded with white flesh.
