Crassula barklyi (Crassulaceae)

വാലിന്റെ അറ്റത്തുള്ള പൊള്ളയായ ശൽക്കങ്ങൾ ചേർന്ന ഭാഗം (rattle) വിറപ്പിച്ചു ചിലമ്പൽ ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന അമേരിക്കൻ വിഷപ്പാമ്പുകളായ Rattle snakes നെ കുറിച്ച് കേട്ടിട്ടില്ലേ? ഇവയുടെ Rattle ആണെന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വിധത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു സസ്യം ഇങ്ങ് ആഫ്രിക്കയിൽ ഉണ്ട്. അറിയുമോ?

നമ്മുടെ ‘ഇലമുളച്ചി’ ചെടിയുടെ കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഈ ചെറുസസ്യം ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ വരണ്ട ഭൂപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് കാണുന്നത്.

ഒരു പേനയുടെ വലുപ്പം മാത്രമുള്ള ഈ സസ്യത്തിന്റെ മാംസളമായ ഇലകൾ തണ്ടിന്മേൽ ശല്ക്കങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ  അടുക്കടുക്കായി ക്രമീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇവയ്ക്ക്‌ Rattle snakes ന്റെ വാലറ്റത്തുള്ള rattle കളോട് അതീവ സാദൃശ്യമുണ്ട്.

അനാവൃതബീജി സസ്യങ്ങളുടെ (Gymnosperms) കോണുകളുമായും (cones) ഇവയ്ക്കു സാദൃശ്യമുണ്ട്. ശിശിരകാലത്ത് തണ്ടിന്റെ അറ്റത്ത് നിറയെ വെളുത്ത പൂക്കളുമായി നിൽക്കുന്ന ഈ സസ്യം മനോഹരമായ ഒരു കാഴ്ച തന്നെയാണ്.

Crassula barklyi is a small perennial succulent plant, native to Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland.

Leaves are fleshy and arranged densely upon the stems, so that they overlap to each others and look like scales. They resemble the rattles (series of hollow, interlocked segments made of keratin) located at the tail ends of the Rattle snakes, which are used to make a loud rattling noise when vibrated.

The stem also resembles the cones of many gymnosperms. During winter, creamy-white and scented flowers are formed at the top of the stems.
