Aristolochia indica (Aristolochiaceae)

സദ്യയ്ക്ക് പച്ചടിയും അച്ചാറുമൊക്കെ വിളമ്പാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന തൂക്കുപാത്രം കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ. അതുപോലത്തെ കായ്കൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഒരു വള്ളിച്ചെടി നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലുണ്ട്. കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ?

നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ കാർളേയം, കരളയം, ഈശ്വരമൂലി, ഗരുഡക്കൊടി എന്നീ പേരുകളിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നതും, നിരവധി ഔഷധാവശ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതുമായ ഒരു വള്ളിച്ചെടിയാണിത്.

പാമ്പ് വിഷത്തിനെതിരെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് കൊണ്ടാണ് ഇതിന് ഗരുഡക്കൊടി എന്ന പേരുവന്നത്. ഗരുഡൻ പാമ്പിന്റെ ശത്രുവാണല്ലോ..!! ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ശലഭമായ ഗരുഡശലഭം ഉൾപ്പെടെ പല വലിയ ശലഭങ്ങളും മുട്ടയിട്ടു വളരുന്ന ആതിഥേയ സസ്യം കൂടിയാണിത്.

ഇവയുടെ മൂപ്പെത്തിയ കായ്കൾക്ക് തൂക്കു പാത്രത്തിന്റെയും, ഉറിയുടെയും ഒക്കെ ആകൃതിയാണ്. ഇതിനകത്തു കാണുന്ന നിരവധി പരന്ന ചിറകുള്ള വിത്തുകൾ കാറ്റത്തു ‘തൂക്കുപാത്രം’ ആടുമ്പോൾ പാറിപ്പോകുന്നത് രസകരമായ കാഴ്ചയാണ്.

Aristolochia indica is a climber found in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Locally it is known as Karalayam or Garudakkodi, since it is the host plant of the butterflies such as Southern birdwing (Garuda salabham), as well as Crimson and Common rose butterflies. The fruit which is a septicidal capsule, resembles a serving bowl used to serve chutneys and pickles.

This plant contains Aristolochic acid, which is toxic to kidneys and also a carcinogen, but is used as an antidote for snake and scorpion poisons and also to prevent seizures, to increase sexual desire, to treat intestinal pain, gallbladder pain, etc.
