Actaea pachypoda (Ranunculaceae)

പാവക്കണ്ണുകൾ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന കായ്കളുള്ള സുന്ദരിയായ ഒരു സസ്യമുണ്ട് അങ്ങ് അമേരിക്കയിൽ. നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം.

വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിലും കാനഡയിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ചെറുസസ്യത്തിനു കൂർത്ത അരികുകളുള്ള സംയുക്ത ഇലകളും (compound leaves) വെളുത്ത പൂക്കുലകളും ആണുള്ളത്.

ഇതിന്റെ ഗോളാകൃതിയുള്ള വെളുത്ത കായ്കളും, അവയുടെ അറ്റത്തുള്ള കരിഞ്ഞുണങ്ങിയ പരാഗണസ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ കറുത്ത പാടുകളും (stigma scar) ചേർന്ന് മനോഹരങ്ങളായ പാവക്കണ്ണുകളുടെ പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

കായ്കളുടെ തണ്ടുകൾ ചുവക്കുക കൂടി ചെയ്യുന്നതിനാൽ കാണാൻ നല്ല ഭംഗിയുണ്ടാകും. എന്നാൽ അത്യന്തം വിഷമേറിയ ഈ കായ്കൾ കഴിച്ചാൽ ഹൃദയസ്തംഭനം മൂലം മരണം സംഭവിച്ചേക്കാം എന്ന് കൂടി ഓർക്കണേ..!!

Actaea pachypoda is a herbaceous perennial plant native to eastern North America, in eastern Canada, and the Midwestern and Eastern United States.

It has toothed, bipinnately compound leaves and white flowers borne in long dense racemes. Its most striking feature is its fruit, which is a white berry, whose size, shape, and black stigma scar give the species its common name, “Doll’s eyes“. The pedicels thicken and become bright red as the berries develop.

Both the berries and the entire plant are considered poisonous to humans. Ingestion of the berries can lead to cardiac arrest and death.
