Paullinia cupana (Sapindaceae)

നമ്മുടെ നേത്രഗോളങ്ങൾ പോലെയുള്ള കായ്കൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഒരു വള്ളിച്ചെടിയുണ്ട്. നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെട്ടാലോ?

ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ മഴക്കാടായ ആമസോണിലാണ്, പ്രാദേശികമായി ഗുരാനാ (Guarana) എന്ന പേരിലറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ വള്ളിച്ചെടി വളരുന്നത്.

വലിയ സംയുക്ത പത്രങ്ങളുള്ള (compound leaves) ഇവയുടെ വെളുത്ത പൂക്കുലകളിൽ നിന്നും രൂപപ്പെട്ടു വരുന്ന ചുവന്ന കായ്കൾ സവിശേഷതയാർന്നതാണ്.

മൂപ്പെത്തിക്കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ കൺപോളകളെ പോലെ തുറന്നുവരുന്ന ഇവയുടെ ഉള്ളിലായി, വെളുത്ത മാംസളമായ ഭാഗത്താൽ (aril) പൊതിഞ്ഞ കറുത്തുരുണ്ട വിത്തുകൾ കാണാം. ഒറ്റനോട്ടത്തിൽ ഇവ നേത്രഗോളങ്ങൾ ആണെന്നേ തോന്നൂ..!!

നമ്മുടെ കാപ്പിയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ ഇരട്ടിയിലധികം ‘കഫീൻ‘ ഉള്ളതിനാൽ, ബ്രസീലിൽ ഈ വിത്തുകൾ പൊടിച്ച് പലയിനം ഉത്തേജക പാനീയങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

‘പാവക്കണ്ണുകൾ‘ (Actaea) ഹൃദയസ്തംഭനമുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന കൊടിയ വിഷവും, എന്നാൽ ഈ ‘നേത്രഗോളങ്ങൾ‘ (Paullinia) ഉത്തേജക പാനീയവുമായി തീരുന്നത് ‘പ്രകൃതിയുടെ വികൃതി’ എന്നല്ലാതെ എന്തു പറയാൻ…!!

Paullinia cupana is a tendril climbing plant native to the Amazon rainforests and especially common in Brazil, having large leaves with 5 oblong-oval leaflets; clusters of white flowers.

The capsular fruit is unique, which resembles the human eye ball, with a red shell encasing a black seed covered by a white aril. The local name Guarana also indicates the same meaning.

The seeds are effective stimulant, since it contains about twice the concentration of caffeine found in coffee beans. This serves as a defensive toxin that repels herbivores from the fruit. Brazil, the third-largest consumer of soft drinks in the world, produces several soft drink brands from the crushed seeds of Guarana, and which they use like coffee.
