Euphorbia obesa (Euphorbiaceae)

ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലെ വരണ്ട ഭൂപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ആണ് ഉരുണ്ട് മാംസളമായ കാണ്ഡവും, വെളുത്ത കറയുമുള്ള ഈ സസ്യം കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇവയ്ക്ക്‌ മുള്ളുകൾ ഒന്നുമില്ല.

ആൺ-പെൺ ചെടികൾ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ഇവയുടെ പൊഴിഞ്ഞു പോകുന്ന പൂക്കൾ അവശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്ന അടയാളങ്ങൾ 8 ലംബമായ നിരകളായി (vertical rows) കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവ പന്തിൽ ഉള്ള തയ്യൽ പോലെ തോന്നിക്കുന്നു. ഉരുണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ചെടി പ്രായമേറുമ്പോൾ സിലിണ്ടർ ആകൃതിയിലേക്ക് മാറുന്നതായി കാണാം.

ഇതിന്റെ കറ ചൊറിച്ചിലും മറ്റു അസ്വസ്ഥതകളും ഉണ്ടാക്കും. എങ്കിലും ഉദ്യാനസസ്യമായി വളർത്താൻ വേണ്ടി ധാരാളമായി ശേഖരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതിനാൽ, വന്യാവസ്ഥയിൽ ഇത് വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്നുണ്ട്.

Euphorbia obesa is a rare subtropical succulent plant indigenous to a small range in the arid Karoo region of South Africa.

The plant has exactly the same shape of a baseball, thornless and decorative, having a diameter of 6-15 cm depending on its age. Young plants are spherical, but become cylindrical with age, but always shows 8 ridges adorned with small deep bulges on the edges.

The ball is green with horizontal lighter or darker stripes. In the wild, and with exposure to direct sunlight, it shows red and purple areas. They are quite toxic, makes severe skin problems.

In the wild it is endangered because of over-collection and poaching, combined with its slow growth. However, it is widely cultivated in botanical gardens and has won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
