വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കയുടെ തെക്കുഭാഗം മുതൽ തെക്കേ അമേരിക്കയുടെ വടക്കുഭാഗം വരെയുള്ള കടലോരങ്ങളിലും കണ്ടൽകാടുകളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചെറുവൃക്ഷമാണിത്.

ആപ്പിൾ മരത്തിനു സമാനമായ ഇലകളും, കായ്കളും ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ കുഞ്ഞൻ ആപ്പിൾ അഥവാ ബീച്ച് ആപ്പിൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. മാഞ്ചിനീൽ എന്ന പ്രാദേശികനാമം കൊണ്ട് ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നതും ഇതുതന്നെ.

മരത്തിന്റെ തൊലിയിലും, ഇലകളിലും, കായ്കളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന വെളുത്ത കറയാണ് അപകടകാരി. ഇത് ശരീരത്തിൽ വീണാൽ ഗുരുതരമായ പൊള്ളൽ ഉണ്ടാക്കും. മഴയത്ത് മരത്തിനടിയിൽ നിന്നാൽ പോലും ഇത് സംഭവിക്കാം. മരത്തിനടിയിൽ നിർത്തുന്ന വാഹനങ്ങളുടെ പെയിന്റ് അടക്കം ദ്രവിച്ചു പോകും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞാൽ ഇതിന്റെ ഗൗരവം മനസ്സിലാകുമല്ലോ..!! ഇതിന്റെ തടി കത്തിച്ചാൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന പുകയേറ്റാൽ കണ്ണിൽ വീക്കവും, വ്രണങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടാകാം.

ചെറിയൊരു അളവിൽ പോലും ഇതിന്റെ കറ ഉള്ളിൽ ചെന്നാൽ അന്നനാളത്തിൽ വ്രണങ്ങളും, രക്തസ്രാവവും, നീർക്കെട്ടും ഉണ്ടായി മരണം സംഭവിക്കാം.

പൊതുവെ പക്ഷികളും മൃഗങ്ങളും ഭയക്കുന്ന ഈ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ കായ്കൾ, പ്രദേശത്ത് ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഒരിനം ഉരഗവർഗ്ഗ ജീവിയായ Black spined Iguana കൾ ആഹരിക്കാറുണ്ട് എന്നത് കൗതുകം ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

ഏതായാലും നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ ഈ വൃക്ഷം ഇല്ലാത്തത് മഹാഭാഗ്യം അല്ലേ?

Hippomane mancinella, is a tree whose native range stretches from tropical southern North America to northern South America.

The name “Manchineel” as well as the specific epithet mancinella, means “little apple“, from the superficial resemblance of its fruit and leaves to those of an Apple tree. It is also known as the Beach apple. A present-day Spanish name is manzanilla de la muerte, meaning “little apple of death“.

According to the Guinness World Records, this tree is in fact the most dangerous tree in the world, since it produces a thick, milky sap from the bark, the leaves and even the fruit – and can cause severe, painful burn-like blisters, if it comes into contact with the skin.

Standing below the tree during the rain will cause skin blisters. The sap is highly acidic and has been known to damage paint on cars. Burning the tree causes ocular injuries. if the smoke reaches the eyes.

Swallowing just a tiny amount of the juice from the fruit had clearly resulted in oral and oesophageal ulceration, bleeding and severe oedema.
