Ceropegia sandersonii (Apocynaceae)

പാരച്യൂട്ട് പോലുള്ള പൂക്കൾ വിരിയുന്ന ഒരു വള്ളിച്ചെടിയുള്ളതായി അറിയുമോ? നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം.

ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയിലാണ് ഹൃദയാകൃതിയിൽ, മാംസളമായ ഇലകളോടു കൂടിയ ഈ വള്ളിച്ചെടി വളരുന്നത്. ഇവയുടെ പച്ചയും വെള്ളയും നിറമുള്ള പൂക്കൾക്ക് ചോർപ്പിന്റെ (funnel) ആകൃതിയാണ്. അരികുകൾ ഒട്ടിച്ചേർന്ന നിലയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഇതളുകൾ ഒരു കുടയുടെയോ, പാരച്യൂട്ടിന്റെയോ ഒക്കെ പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

ഇതളുകൾക്കിടയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ദ്വാരങ്ങളിലൂടെ ഉള്ളിൽ കയറിപ്പറ്റുന്ന പ്രാണികൾ ചോർപ്പിനുള്ളിൽ അകപ്പെടുന്നു. മേലാസകലം പൂമ്പൊടിയാൽ മൂടപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവയ്ക്ക് പരാഗണവും കഴിഞ്ഞു ഇതളുകൾ കൊഴിയാനാകുമ്പോഴേ രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ പറ്റൂ.

സവിശേഷതയാർന്ന രൂപസൗകുമാര്യത്താൽ ഇത് ഏവരും താൽപര്യപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഉദ്യാനസസ്യമായി മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

Ceropegia sandersonii is an evergreen, slender twiner with heart-shaped leaves, that is native to Mozambique, South Africa, and Swaziland.

The flowers are greenish white and funnel-shaped with partially fused corolla lobes, the tips of which do not separate, but instead form a roof or umbrella/parachute like dome on the flower, hence the common names such as Umbrella plant, Parachute plant, Fountain flower etc.

It is also called Windowed flowers, because of the openings between the petals, referred to as windows, which traps the insects that enter through them. The trapped are covered with pollen and only released when the flower reaches the end of its life and the hairs weaken. The flower has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Award of Garden Merit’.
