ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലാണ് ഈ കള്ളിമുൾച്ചെടി കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. സീബ്രകളുടെ ശരീരത്തിലെന്ന പോലെ ചുവപ്പും ക്രീമും നിറത്തിൽ വരകളോടു കൂടിയ ഇവയുടെ വലിയ പൂക്കൾ മനോഹരങ്ങളാണ്.

പൂക്കളുടെ മധ്യഭാഗത്തു വൃത്താകൃതിയിൽ ഉയർന്നിരിക്കുന്ന മാംസളമായ ഒരു ഭാഗമുണ്ട് (annulus). മെറൂൺ നിറത്തിലുള്ള ഈ ഭാഗം കണ്ടാൽ കൂമന്റെ കണ്ണുകളാണോ എന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പോകും..!!

ഈ ഭാഗത്തിന്, കപ്പലപകടമൊക്കെ ഉണ്ടാകുമ്പോൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വായു നിറച്ച ട്യൂബിന്റെ (Lifebuoy) രൂപം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ലൈഫ്ബോയ് സസ്യം എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു.

പൂക്കൾക്ക് ചീഞ്ഞളിഞ്ഞ മൃതശരീരങ്ങളുടെ ദുർഗന്ധം ആയതിനാൽ മൃതശരീരപുഷ്പം (Carrion flower) എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

Huernia zebrina is a succulent plant native to Namibia, Botswana, northern South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.

It’s flower consists of a zebra-striped red and cream-colored petals with a raised, glossy, rubber-like maroon ring in the center called annulus, which looks like the eyes of owls.

Also called Lifebuoy plant, since it resembles a lifebuoy used in boats, which keeps a person afloat in water. The odor of the flower is often compared to carrion, the decaying flesh of dead animals, hence also called as Carrion flower.

As a succulent, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award Award of Garden Merit.
