Cissus verticillata (Vitaceae)

പ്രകൃതിയൊരുക്കിയ ഒരു കർട്ടൻ ഉണ്ട്. വേരുകൾ കൊണ്ടൊരു കർട്ടൻ..!! ഏതാണെന്ന് അറിയേണ്ടേ?

മുന്തിരിയുടെ കുടുംബക്കാരിയാണ് മദ്ധ്യഅമേരിക്കക്കാരിയായ ഈ വള്ളിച്ചെടി. ചുരുൾ വേരുകൾ (tendrils) ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഉയരങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കയറി പോകുന്ന ഈ വള്ളിച്ചെടിയിൽ നിന്നും ധാരാളം ആകാശവേരുകൾ (aerial roots) താഴേക്ക് തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കും.

ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചു വളർത്തുകയാണെങ്കിൽ പ്രകൃതിദത്തമായ ഒരു നല്ല കർട്ടൻ ആക്കി ഇതിനെ മാറ്റാം. ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലോ, പടർന്നുകയറി ആതിഥേയ സസ്യത്തെ ഒന്നാകെ മൂടി നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കളയായും (weed) ഇത് മാറിയേക്കാം.

ഇതേ വേരുകൾ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തി കുട്ടകൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇലകൾ താളിയായും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. ബ്രസീലിൽ,  ഇതിന്റെ ഇലകൾ പ്രമേഹത്തിനെതിരെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ പ്രകൃതിദത്ത ഇൻസുലിൻ സസ്യം എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

Cissus verticillata is a large, tendril climbing species cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant, which is native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean and is introduced elsewhere.

Its incredibly long and fast growing aerial roots, if left undisturbed, can reach more than 10 m in length and grow so densely that they literally form a curtain of roots, hanging from the tree it grows on. It is also known as Millionaire vine, Princess vine, Tropical Grape vine etc.

It will usually engulf the entire host trees. Hence it is regarded as a weed in areas within and outside its native distribution range. The stems and roots are used as cordage and to make baskets. The leaves are used as soap. Leaf decoctions are used as a remedy for diabetes in Brazil, where its common name is “Vegetal insulin”.
