നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ ഉദ്യാനങ്ങളിൽ സാധാരണയായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു പ്രകൃതിദത്ത കർട്ടൻ ഉണ്ട്. ഏതാണെന്ന് അറിയുമോ?

നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലും, ബർമ്മയിലും, തായ്‌ലാൻഡിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന പൂവാംകുറുന്തലിന്റെ കുടുംബക്കാരിയാണ് ഈ സസ്യം.

ബലമില്ലാത്തതും, നേർത്തതുമായ കാണ്ഡമായതിനാൽ മറ്റു ചെടികളുടെയോ മതിലിന്റെയോ മുകളിലേക്കൊക്കെ പടർന്നുകയറി തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന രൂപത്തിലാണ് ഇവ കാണപ്പെടാറ്. ശ്രദ്ധാപൂർവ്വം വളർച്ച നിയന്ത്രിച്ചു വെട്ടി നിർത്തിയാൽ ഇവയെ മനോഹരങ്ങളായ ഹരിത തിരശ്ശീലകൾ (Green curtains) ആക്കി മാറ്റാം. ഇല്ലെങ്കിലോ, പടർന്നു വളർന്നു ഒരു ശല്യമായി തീരും.

എളുപ്പം വളർത്താവുന്നതും പരിചരണമൊട്ടും വേണ്ടാത്തതുമായ ഈ സസ്യത്തെ നമ്മുടെ മിക്ക ഉദ്യാനങ്ങളിലും കാണാവുന്നതാണ്.

Tarlmounia elliptica (syn. Vernonia elliptica & V. elaeagnifolia), is a creeper which is native to India, Burma and Thailand and naturalised in southern Taiwan and Queensland, Australia.

The plant finds it difficult to climb without support. So, the slender stems climb up and then fall down beautifully over a wall or railing forming a curtain view, hence the common name Curtain Creeper. Flowers are dull white and aggregated in axillary or terminal corymbs. Seeds have pappus and hence are dispersed by wind.

This is considered as a zero maintenance plant which is easy to grow, and is commonly seen hanging over walls in cities. Curtain like partitions and also topiaries can be grown using the plant.
