ഏഷ്യയിൽ, ഭാരതം ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ വളരുന്ന ഒരു കള്ളിമുൾച്ചെടിയാണ് Euphorbia lactea.

അവയിൽ കൃത്രിമ ഉൽപരിവർത്തനം (artificial mutation) വഴി ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ ഉദ്യാന ഇനങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് cristata. ഇതിൽ തന്നെ പച്ചനിറം കൂടാതെ വെള്ള, മഞ്ഞ, പിങ്ക്, വയലറ്റ് എന്നീ നിറങ്ങളുള്ളവയും ഉണ്ട്.

ഹരിതകത്തിന്റെ ന്യൂനത കാരണം പച്ചനിറം ഒഴികെയുള്ളവ സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ വേരുപിടിച്ചു വളരാറില്ല. അവയെ മറ്റു യൂഫോർബിയ (Euphorbia) സ്പീഷീസുകളിൽ ഗ്രാഫ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു പിടിപ്പിച്ചാണ് ഈ പ്രേതരൂപികളെ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്

ഇതിന്റെ വിഷമുള്ള വെളുത്ത കറ കണ്ണിലും മുറിവുകളിലും വീണാൽ പൊള്ളലേൽക്കും. ചെടിയുമായുള്ള നിരന്തരസമ്പർക്കം കാൻസറിനും കാരണമാകുമെന്ന് പഠനങ്ങൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

Euphorbia lactea is an erect, succulent, spiny shrub with green ridged branches, growing up to 5 metres, native to tropical Asia, mainly in India.

Among the ornamental cultivars, ‘cristata‘ with intricately undulating fan-shaped branches forming a snaky ridge or crowded cluster is more popular.

These variegated cultivars range in colour from white to, yellow, pink, violet and green, among which the green form is propagated by cuttings or grafts. The variegated forms are difficult to grow on their own roots, and are generally grafted for convenience on Euphorbia neriifolia, E. canariensis or E. resinifera. Other Common names include Pink Ghost Crest, Crested White Ghost etc.

Plants contain poisonous milky latex, which is toxic on ingestion and highly irritant externally, especially on contact with eyes or open cuts. Prolonged and regular contact is inadvisable since it is carcinogenic.
