Protea cynaroides (Proteaceae)
‘400 വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ പൂക്കുന്ന ഹിമാലയത്തിലെ അപൂർവ്വ മഹാമേരു പുഷ്പം‘ എന്ന പേരിൽ വ്യാജമായി പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മറ്റൊരു പുഷ്പത്തെ നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം. ആളൊരു വിദേശിയാണ് കേട്ടോ..
‘ഹിമാലയൻ’ വിശേഷണങ്ങൾ ചാർത്തപ്പെട്ട ഈ കുറ്റിച്ചെടി, യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കക്കാരനാണ്. ഒരടിയോളം വ്യാസമുള്ള വലിയ ‘പൂക്കൾ ‘ ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന ഇവ അവിടത്തെ ദേശീയ പുഷ്പം കൂടിയാണ്.
എന്നാൽ സത്യത്തിൽ ‘പൂവ്‘ എന്നു തോന്നിക്കുന്നത് നൂറുകണക്കിന് പൂക്കൾ ചേർന്ന്‌ (സൂര്യകാന്തിയെ പോലെ) വിടർന്നു നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു പൂക്കുലയാണ് (capitulum) കേട്ടോ. മധ്യത്തിലായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന നൂറുകണക്കിന് വെളുത്ത കുഞ്ഞു പൂക്കളെ വലയം ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ട്, വെള്ളയും ചുവപ്പും നിറത്തിലുള്ള ധാരാളം സഹപത്രങ്ങൾ (bracts) കാണാം. പൂവിതളുകളെപ്പോലിരിക്കുന്ന ഇവ കാരണം ‘പൂക്കുല’ കണ്ടാൽ ഒരു വലിയ പൂവാണെന്നേ തോന്നൂ..!!
ഒരുപാട് നാൾ കേടുകൂടാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പുഷ്പത്തിന്റെ വർണ്ണത്തിലും രൂപത്തിലും വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന 81ഓളം ഇനങ്ങൾ ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. സ്വന്തം ഇച്ഛയ്ക്കനുസരിച്ച് നിമിഷാർദ്ധം കൊണ്ട് രൂപം മാറാൻ കഴിവുള്ള ഗ്രീക്ക് ദേവനായ പ്രോട്ടിയസിന്റെ പേര് ഇതിനു ലഭിച്ചത് ഈ വൈവിധ്യം കാരണമാണ്.
അലങ്കാരസസ്യ വിപണിയിൽ വളരെയധികം ഡിമാൻഡുള്ള ഈ പുഷ്പം ഇന്ന് ന്യൂസിലാൻഡിലും, ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലും, ഹവായിയിലും, അമേരിക്കയിലും ഒക്കെ ധാരാളമായി വളർത്തപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.
Protea cynaroides, also called the King protea, is a woody shrub with thick stems and large dark green, glossy leaves, and very large “flowers”.
It is widely distributed in the southwestern and southern parts of South Africa and is the National flower of that country.
The “flowers” are actually large composite flower heads (inflorescence) with a collection of flowers in the centre, surrounded by large creamy white to a deep crimson bracts, from about 12-30 cm in diameter.
Horticulturists have recognized 81 garden varieties, some of which have injudiciously been planted in its natural range. It has a long vase life in flower arrangements, and makes for an excellent dried flower. The amazing number of varieties in flower size and colour was the reason it was named after the Greek god Proteus, who could change his shape at will.
It is now grown in large quantities in New Zealand, Australia, America and Hawaii.
