Carnegiea gigantea (Cactaceae)
‘400 വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കൽ പൂക്കുന്ന ഹിമാലയത്തിലെ മഹാമേരു പുഷ്പം‘ എന്ന പേരിൽ വ്യാജമായി പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മറ്റൊരു പുഷ്പത്തെ കൂടി നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം. ആളൊരു വിദേശിയായ കള്ളിമുൾച്ചെടിയാണ് കേട്ടോ..
അമേരിക്കയിലെ അരിസോണയിലുള്ള സോണോരൻ മരുഭൂമിയിൽ വളരുന്ന ഒരു കൂറ്റൻ കള്ളിമുൾചെടി ആണിത്. ഇതിനെ അവിടത്തെ ദേശീയ വന്യപുഷ്പം ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
20 മീറ്ററോളം ഉയരവും 75 cm ഓളം വ്യാസവും വെയ്ക്കുന്ന ഇതിന്റെ ആയുസ്സ് ഇരുന്നൂറ് വർഷത്തിലേറെയാണ്. സൂര്യാസ്തമയത്തിനു ശേഷം മാത്രം വിരിയുന്ന വലിയ, വെളുത്ത, ദൃഢമായ പൂക്കളാണ് ഇതിന്റെ സവിശേഷത. 3000 ലധികം കേസരങ്ങളും, നല്ല സുഗന്ധവും ഉള്ള പൂക്കൾക്ക് പക്ഷേ 24 മണിക്കൂറേ ആയുസ്സുള്ളൂ. ഇതിനിടയിൽ വവ്വാലുകളും, പക്ഷികളും, തേനീച്ചകളും ഇവയുടെ പരാഗണം നിർവ്വഹിച്ചു കൊള്ളും. 2000 ലധികം വിത്തുകളുണ്ടാകുന്ന, മാംസളവും, മാധുര്യവുമുള്ള കടും ചുവപ്പ് നിറമുള്ള ഫലങ്ങൾ ഇവ പ്രത്യുപകാരമായി ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്.
മരുഭൂമിയിലെ ജീവികളുടെ പ്രധാന ഭക്ഷ്യസ്രോതസ്സും, വാസസ്ഥലവുമായി വർത്തിച്ചു, ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയെ നിലനിർത്തുന്ന ഈ ചെടിയെ അതിനാൽ തന്നെ ഒരു Keystone species ആയി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. 1994 ൽ, നിലവിൽ വന്ന Saguara National Park എന്ന ദേശീയോദ്യാനം ഇതിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണാർത്ഥം രൂപീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണ്.
Carnegiea gigantea is a spinous, succulent tree-like cactusspecies which is endemic to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, the Mexican state of Sonora, and in south-eastern California. It is the state wildflower of Arizona.
It may grow to over 20 m tall and upto 75 cm in diameter and has a long lifespan, often exceeding 200 years. It can absorb and store considerable amounts of rainwater, which helps it to survive during periods of drought.
Flowers are white and waxy, opening well after sunset and may remain for less than 24 hours. They are fragrant, have nectar and plenty of stamens (>3000). They are also strong enough to hold the pollinators such as bats and birds. The fruits are sweet, ruby red in colour with about 2,000 seeds.
Being a keystone species, which provides food, shelter, and protection to hundreds of other species, in 1994, Saguaro National Park, was designated to help protect this species and its habitat.
