Nelumbo nucifera Variety – “Zhizun Qianban”

‘സർഗ്ഗം’ എന്ന സൂപ്പർ ഹിറ്റ് സിനിമയിലെ ‘സംഗീതമേ അമരസല്ലാപമേ..’  എന്ന ഗാനം കേട്ടിട്ടില്ലേ? അതിലെ ‘ആദിമ ചൈതന്യ നാഭിയിൽ വിരിയും ആയിരം ഇതളുള്ള താമരയിൽ..’ എന്ന വരികൾ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ? യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ആയിരം ഇതളുള്ള താമരയുണ്ടോ? നമുക്കൊന്നു നോക്കാം…

പല പുരാണങ്ങളിലും സഹസ്രദളപത്മത്തെ കുറിച്ച് പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതായി നമുക്കറിയാം. ഈയിടെയായി, ഇവ കേരളത്തിൽ വളരുന്നതായി നിരവധി വാർത്തകൾ വന്നിരുന്നു.

താമരയുടെ ജനുസ്സിൽ (Nelumbo) ലോകത്തിലാകമാനമായി രണ്ടു സ്പീഷീസുകൾ ആണുള്ളത്. ഏഷ്യയിൽ കാണുന്ന പിങ്കും വെള്ളയും പൂക്കളുണ്ടാകുന്ന ന്യൂസിഫെറയും (nucifera) അമേരിക്കയിൽ കാണുന്ന മഞ്ഞപ്പൂക്കളുള്ള ലൂട്ടിയയും (lutea).

ന്യൂസിഫെറയിൽ സ്വാഭാവിക ഉൽപ്പരിവർത്തനം (natural mutation) മൂലം ഉണ്ടായ ഒരു ഇനമാണ് Zhizun Qianban. 2008ൽ ചൈനയിലാണ് ഈയൊരിനത്തെ കുറിച്ച് ആദ്യമായി റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത്. 2009ൽ ദക്ഷിണ ചൈന ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ ഗാർഡനിലെ Dr. Daike Tian ഇതിനെ Zhizun (ആദരണീയം) Qianban (ആയിരം ഇതളുകൾ) എന്ന് നാമകരണം ചെയ്യുകയുണ്ടായി.

പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു പോലെ ഈ ഇനത്തിന് 1650 ഇതളുകൾ വരെ കണ്ടേക്കാം. പക്ഷേ കേസരങ്ങളോ (stamens), പ്രവർത്തനക്ഷമമായ ജനിയോ (carpels) ഇല്ല. അതിനാൽ തന്നെ വിത്തുകൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നില്ല. കിഴങ്ങുകൾ വഴിയാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പ്രജനനം നടത്തുന്നത്.

എന്നാൽ ഏതാണ്ട് ഇതു പോലിരിക്കുന്ന (ഇതളുകൾ ലേശം കുറവ്), Zhongshan Hongtai എന്ന, കേസരങ്ങളും ജനിയുമുള്ള, അതിനാൽ തന്നെ വിത്തുകൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന ഇനവും ഉണ്ട് കേട്ടോ. (അവസാനത്തെ ചിത്രം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കൂ..!!)

Nelumbo nucifera ‘Zhizun Qianban’ is a newly named large-sized lotus cultivar discovered and named by Dr. Daike Tian at the South China Botanical Garden (SCBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2009. It was later registered by the International Waterlily and Water Garden Society in 2010.

This lotus was introduced by an aquatic plant researcher, Dr. Lei Chen, in 2008 from a small nursery owned by Mr. Changxin Chen in the suburb of Guangzhou

Zhizun Qianban, (in Chinese means “ultimate thousand-petals”) has a double pink flower composed of up to 1650 petals, no stamen, and extremely degenerated receptacle, and was probably derived and preserved as a natural mutation from the wild. It more closely resembles another cultivar Zhongshan Hongtai, which also has very large number of petals, some stamens, and a nearly normal receptacle.

‘Zhizun Qianban’ is suggested to be the best and most honorable thousand-petal lotus ever found in the world.
