Terminalia molinetii (Combretaceae)

‘രസതന്ത്രം വൃക്ഷം‘..!! കേട്ടിട്ട് തന്നെ കൗതുകം തോന്നുന്നു അല്ലേ. നമുക്ക് ഇയാളെ ഒന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം…

പ്രധാനമായും കരീബിയൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ ആണ് നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ ബദാം, ആറ്റുമരുത് എന്നീ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളുടെ ജനുസ്സിൽപ്പെട്ട (Terminalia) ഈ ചെറുവൃക്ഷം വളരുന്നത്.

വളഞ്ഞുപുളഞ്ഞു പലപ്പോഴും ഷഡ്ഭുജകോണാകൃതിയിൽ (hexagonal) രൂപപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്ന ശാഖകളാണ് ഈ വൃക്ഷത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത. ഇതു കണ്ടാൽ പല സ്റ്റിറോയ്ഡുകളുടെയും (steroids) ഘടനയിൽ കാണുന്ന ഹൈഡ്രോകാർബൺ ചങ്ങലകൾ പോലെ തോന്നും. ഇതിനെ ജ്യാമിതി വൃക്ഷം (Geometry Tree) എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നതും ഈ രൂപ സവിശേഷത മൂലമാണ്.

കൂടുതലും കുള്ളൻ ബോൺസായികൾ (Bonsai) ആയി വളർത്തുന്ന ഈ വൃക്ഷത്തിന് വളരെ ചെറിയ ഇലകളും പൂക്കളും ആണുള്ളത്.

Terminalia molinetii is a small tree native to Caribbean from Southern Mexico to Belize, Cuba to S. Hispaniola, St. Croix.

Crown may be layered when plant is young, but becomes oval to round, denser and flattened out with age. Leaves are small, produced in whorls at nodes, clustered at branch tips. Flowers are tiny, creamy white, in clusters.

The branches exhibits horizontally-zigzag branching pattern resembling hexagonal carbon chains, hence the name.

It is usually grown as a Bonsai (thereby known as Ming Tree in America). Other common names are Spiny Black Olive, Dwarf Geometry Tree, Spiny Bucida etc.
