ഈ സ്പടിക-രത്ന ചോളം ജന ശ്രദ്ധയാകർഷിക്കുന്നത് 2012 ൽ അരിസോണയിലുള്ള സീഡ് ട്രസ്റ്റ് (Seed Trust) എന്ന സ്ഥാപനം അവരുടെ ഫേസ്ബുക്ക് പേജിൽ ഇതിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോ പോസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തപ്പോഴാണ്.

കാൾ ബാൺസിന്റെ ‘മഴവിൽ ചോളത്തിൽ’ കൂടുതൽ വർഗ്ഗസങ്കരണ (hybridization) പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയ ഗ്രെഗ് ഷോയൻ ആണ് 2007ൽ അദ്ദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തിയ ഈ പുതിയ ഇനത്തിന് പേരിട്ടത്.

നീലകലർന്ന പച്ചയും, പിങ്കുകലർന്ന പർപ്പിളും നിറമുള്ള ഇതിന്റെ മണികൾ അർദ്ധസുതാര്യമാണ് (translucent) എന്നതാണ് പ്രത്യേകത.

2009ൽ അദ്ദേഹം സീഡ് ട്രസ്റ്റ് എന്ന വിത്തു ഗവേഷണ-വിതരണ സ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ തലവനായ ബിൽ മക്ഡോർമന് ഇതിന്റെ വിത്തുകൾ കൈമാറി. അവരാണ് ഇതിന് ആദ്യമായി ഫേസ്ബുക്കിലൂടെ പ്രചാരം കൊടുത്തത്. മക്ഡോർമൻ തന്നെ പിന്നീട് തലവനായ നേറ്റീവ് സീഡ്സ് എന്ന സ്ഥാപനം ഇപ്പോഴും ഈ വിത്തുകൾ ഓൺലൈനായി വിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

സാധാരണ ചോളം പോലെത്തന്നെ ഉപയോഗിക്കാമെങ്കിലും, അത്ര സ്വാദിഷ്ടമല്ല ഇത്. നിറ വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന പളുങ്കുമണികൾ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന ഇവ കൂടുതലും അലങ്കാരസസ്യമായാണ് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.

Glass Gem corn, is a unique variety of rainbow-colored corn, with translucent, jewel-colored ears, which became an Internet sensation in 2012, when a photo of the sparkling cob was posted to Facebook.

This name was given by Greg Schoen for a blue-green and pink-purple corn he grew in 2007, out of a line of ‘rainbow corn’ that was originally bred by Carl Barnes.

In 2009, Schoen gifted several varieties of the rainbow seeds to Bill McDorman, a former Executive Director of Native Seeds/SEARCH, an Arizona-based company which still sells the seeds on its website.

Glass Gem can be ground into cornmeal for use in dishes or popped. However, it does have good corn flavor. Its majestic beauty makes it a popular breed for ornamental purposes.
