ചോളവും, ചോളപ്പൊരിയും നമുക്ക് ഏവർക്കും അറിയാം. എന്നാൽ ‘മഴവിൽ ചോളം‘ എന്ന് കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ? നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടേണ്ടേ?

ഏതാണ്ട് 40 വർഷം മുമ്പ് അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഒക്ലഹോമയിൽ, തദ്ദേശീയരായ ആദിവാസികൾ കൃഷിചെയ്തിരുന്ന നിറവൈവിധ്യമുള്ള ചില പൗരാണിക ചോള ഇനങ്ങളിൽ വർഗ്ഗസങ്കരണം (hybridization) നടത്തിയാണ് ഈ ഇനത്തെ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത്.

കാൾ ബാൺസ് എന്ന് ചോളകർഷകന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണപാടവവും, താൽപര്യവും, സ്ഥിരോത്സാഹവുമാണ് ഈ കണ്ടെത്തലിനു പിന്നിൽ..!!

പിന്നീട് 1994ൽ ബാൺസിന്റെ സുഹൃത്തായ ഗ്രെഗ് ഷോയൻ കൂടുതൽ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തുകയും, വീണ്ടും വ്യത്യസ്ത നിറങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. പ്രശസ്തമായ തീർന്ന ഈയിനം ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമാണെങ്കിലും പലരും അലങ്കാരസസ്യമായാണ് വളർത്തുന്നത്.

കഴിഞ്ഞമാസം, മലപ്പുറം കുന്നുമ്മലിലുള്ള പി. അബ്ദുൽ റഷീദ് ഇതു വളർത്തുന്നതായി പത്രറിപ്പോർട്ട് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

Rainbow corn is a variety of Corn (Zea mays) developed by Carl Barnes in Oklahoma of United States, from crossing several different Native American corn varieties (eg. Cherokee & Pawnee).

Barnes began to isolate these special ancestral varieties, and replanting seeds from particularly colourful cobs. Over time, this resulted in Rainbow-coloured corn in the 1980s, which was created from a mixture of Pawnee miniature, Osage Red Flour and Osage Greyhorse corns.

In 1994, Carl Barnes met Greg Schoen, another fan of unusual corns who later began to grow the ‘Rainbow corn’ that Barnes had created. He could get various colours and patterns that emerged, which he named as ‘circus colours’, ‘true rainbow’, ‘deep blue‘, and so on.

This has now become a very popular corn, because of its amazing beauty.
