Orchis italica (Orchidaceae)

‘നഗ്ന മനുഷ്യൻ‘ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് ഉണ്ട്. പലപ്പോഴായി സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയയിൽ പോസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ചൊന്ന് അറിയണ്ടേ?

മെഡിറ്ററേനിയൻ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലെ (ദക്ഷിണ യൂറോപ്പ്, പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഏഷ്യ, വടക്കേ ആഫ്രിക്ക) പുൽമേടുകളിൽ വളരുന്ന പിങ്കും വെള്ളയും കലർന്ന പൂക്കളുള്ള ഒരു സസ്യമാണിത്.

എല്ലാ ഓർക്കിഡുകളെയും പോലെ 3 വിദളങ്ങളും, 3 ദളങ്ങളും ആണിതിനുള്ളത്. മധ്യഭാഗത്തെ ദളമാണ് (labellum) പുരുഷ ശരീരഭാഗങ്ങളെ പോലെ തോന്നിക്കുന്നത്. മുകളിലുള്ള രണ്ട് ദളങ്ങളും ഒരു വിദളവും ചേർന്ന്, തലയിൽ ഒരു തൊപ്പിയുടെ പ്രതീതിയും ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കൗതുകകരം അല്ലേ?

ഇറ്റലിയിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ സസ്യം ആദ്യം റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത്. അവിടെ, ഇതിന്റെ കിഴങ്ങുകൾ ലൈംഗികശേഷി വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുമെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പൂക്കളുടെ സവിശേഷ രൂപമായിരിക്കാം ഈ വിശ്വാസത്തിന് കാരണം..!!

Orchis italica is a tall herb growing to 50 cm, with bright pink flowers, native to the Mediterranean region, from southern Europe to western Asia and northern Africa.

It gets its common name from the lobed lip (labellum) of each flower which mimics the general shape of a hatted naked man. The petals and sepals that constitute the “hat” are often striped.

The genus name Orchis means ‘testacles‘, a reference to the twin root tubers of orchids in this genus. The specific epithet italica means ‘Italian‘, since it was first formally described from Italy, where it is believed that the consumption of the plant is conducive to virility.
