നമ്മുടെ രാജമല്ലി പൊതുവേ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് മയൂര പുഷ്പം എന്ന പേരിലാണെന്നുള്ള കാര്യം അറിയുമോ? എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണെന്ന് നോക്കാം…

അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ -മിതോഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് രാജമല്ലിയുടെ ജന്മദേശം. കരീബിയൻ ദ്വീപായ ബാർബഡോസിന്റെ ദേശീയപുഷ്പം കൂടിയാണിത്.

സംയുക്ത പത്രങ്ങളും, ഏതാണ്ട് ഒരേ വിതാനത്തിൽ ബൊക്കെ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന (corymb), ഓറഞ്ചും, മഞ്ഞയും, ചുവപ്പും, പിങ്കും നിറങ്ങൾ ചേർന്ന പൂക്കുലകളുമാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത.

അഞ്ചിതളുകളുള്ള പൂക്കളിൽ ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലായി വിശറി പോലെയുള്ള നാലിതളുകൾ ആണുള്ളത്. മധ്യത്തിലുള്ള ഇതളിന് മെലിഞ്ഞുനീണ്ട ഒരു കഴുത്തും, ഉരുണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തലയും/അറ്റവും ആണുള്ളത്. മൊത്തത്തിൽ, പീലി വിടർത്തിയാടുന്ന ഒരു മയിലിന്റെ രൂപം നമുക്കിതിൽ ദർശിക്കാം.

ഇതിന്റെ വിത്തുകൾക്ക് വിഷമുണ്ട്. അടിമത്തം നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന കാലത്ത്, റെഡ് ഇന്ത്യൻ അടിമകൾ, ജീവിതമോചനത്തിനായി ഇതിന്റെ വിത്തുകൾ കഴിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. മാത്രമല്ല ഗർഭിണികളായ അടിമകൾ, ഗർഭച്ഛിദ്രത്തിനും ഇവ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നതായി രേഖകളിൽ കാണാം.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima is a branching shrub with bipinnate leaves, native to the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. It is the national flower of the Caribbean island of Barbados. 

Flowers are borne in long terminal corymbose racemes, with colours ranging from flame-red, rosy-pink to yellow. The four fan like side petals spoon like central petal, and the 10 long reddish stamens together resemble the shape of a Dancing Peacock, hence the name.

Other common names for this species include Red bird of paradise, Mexican Bird of paradise, Dwarf Poinciana, Pride of Barbados etc.

The seeds are poisonous and was used by the American Indians as abortifacients and also to commit  suicide by the enslaved peoples.
