Caladenia melanema (Orchidaceae)

യൂറോപ്പിലും റഷ്യയിലുമെല്ലാം പ്രചാരത്തിലുള്ള ബാലെ ഡാൻസ് കണ്ടിട്ടില്ലേ? അതിലെ നർത്തകിമാരെ (Ballerina) പോലിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് പുഷ്പമുണ്ട്. നമുക്കൊന്നു പരിചയപ്പെട്ടാലോ?

പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആസ്ട്രേലിയയുടെ തെക്കു-പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഭാഗത്തു മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന, വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്ന, അത്യപൂർവ്വ ഓർക്കിഡ് ആണിത്.

ചുവന്ന അടയാളങ്ങളോടെയുള്ള വെള്ളയും, ക്രീമും നിറമുള്ള ഒന്നോ രണ്ടോ പൂക്കളാണ് ഒരു ചെടിയിൽ ഉണ്ടാവുക. മുകളിലേക്കുയർത്തി നിൽക്കുന്ന രണ്ട് കൈകൾ പോലെയുള്ള ദളങ്ങളും, ബാലെ ഡാൻസർമാർ ധരിക്കുന്ന ‘ടുട്ടു‘ വസ്ത്രം പോലെയുള്ള കീഴ്ദളവും (labellum), തലയും കഴുത്തും പോലിരിക്കുന്ന പൂവിന്റെ ലൈംഗിക ഭാഗങ്ങളും (column & pollinarium) ചേർന്ന് നൃത്തം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു ബാലെ ഡാൻസറുടെ പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.

അതീവ വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്ന ഈ മനോഹര പുഷ്പം തെക്കു-പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആസ്ട്രേലിയയിലെ അൽത്താം തടാകക്കരയിൽ മാത്രമേ ഇന്ന് കാണപ്പെടുന്നുള്ളൂ..!!

Caladenia melanema, is a terrestrial, perennial tuberous herb with a single erect hairy leaf, endemic to the south-west of Western Australia.

It is an extremely rare orchid with a single erect, hairy leaf and one or two cream-coloured to pale yellow flowers with red markings. The flower looks a Ballerina, a ballet dancer – its lateral petals and sepals look like hands and legs, rose and white portions of the labellum looks like a rose bodice and a white tutu dress worn by the dancers, the column and the pollinarium together look like a head.

The Ballerina orchid is only known from a one population near Lake Altham in the Mallee biogeographic region of southwestern Australia and is classified as “Critically Endangered” by the Western Australian Government.
