മധ്യ-ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. മുന്നൂറിലധികം ഇനങ്ങളുള്ള Oncidium എന്ന ജനുസ്സിലെ മഞ്ഞയും, വെള്ളയും, പിങ്കും നിറത്തിലുള്ള പൂക്കളുള്ളവയാണ് Dancing lady കൾ എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായത്.

ഇവയുടെ ഇതളുകളും, കേസരവും-ജനിയും കൂടിച്ചേർന്നു കുഴലാകൃതിയിൽ രൂപപ്പെട്ട ഭാഗവും (column) ചേർന്ന് മൊത്തത്തിൽ സുന്ദരിയായ ഒരു നർത്തകിയെ അനുസ്മരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പൂക്കുലകൾ കണ്ടാൽ, നിറയെ പൂമ്പാറ്റകൾ 🦋 വന്നിരിക്കുന്നതാണോ എന്നും തോന്നിയേക്കാം..!!

Oncidium orchids are New World epiphytic orchids, with long and abundant leaves, found in South and Central America and the West Indies, with one species in South Florida.

There are over 300 species of Oncidiums, but the most popular for home growers are the yellow or pink-flowered varieties sold simply as “Dancing Lady”. It is the expanded labellum, lateral petals and the head like column that gives the flower this beautiful appearance. They also resemble branches covered with butterflies waving in the breeze.

Like other epiphytic orchids, these ornamental orchids are usually planted onto the bark of trees.
