ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കയിൽ കൊളംബിയ, ഇക്വഡോർ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്ന ആൻഡിസ് (Andes) പർവതനിരകളിലെ നിത്യഹരിതവനങ്ങളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചെറുസസ്യമാണിത്.

പാറപ്പുറത്തും, മരങ്ങളുടെ മീതെയും വളരുന്ന ഈ സസ്യത്തിന്റെ ഇലകൾ തിളങ്ങുന്ന പച്ചനിറത്തിൽ ഹൃദയാകൃതിയിലുള്ളവയാണ്. കരിഞ്ചുവപ്പ് നിറത്തിലുള്ള ഞരമ്പുകൾ ഇലകൾക്ക് പ്രത്യേക ഭംഗി നൽകുന്നു. ചെറിയ പൂക്കുലകളിലായി ചുവന്ന പൂക്കൾ ഇലകൾക്ക് മേലെ തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കും. ഒന്നിലധികം പൂക്കൾ ഉണ്ടാകുമെങ്കിലും ഓരോന്നായേ വിരിയൂ.

ആഭരണ ഓർക്കിഡ് എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവയ്ക്ക് നല്ല പരിചരണം ആവശ്യമുണ്ട്. ഈ ജനുസ്സിൽ, ഏതാണ്ട് ഒരു പോലിരിക്കുന്ന വിവിധങ്ങളായ സ്പീഷീസുകളും, സങ്കര ഇനങ്ങളും ഇന്ന് ലഭ്യമാണ്.

Lepanthes calodictyon is a very small epiphytic or lithophytic herb native to western Colombia and Ecuador in wet montane forests, especially in the Andes mountains.

It is because of its sub-circular or ovate leaves with purple veining on a bright green background and the beautiful small red flowers borne in pendulous racemes, that it is called as a Jewel orchid. The small flowers are usually red, and open singly in succession in racemes originating in the leaf margin.

As an ornamental plant, it needs high humidity, constant watering and fertilizer.
