Diuris sp. (Orchidaceae)

‘കഴുതത്തലയൻ‘ എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് പുഷ്പം ഉണ്ട്. അറിയുമോ?

ആസ്ട്രേലിയയിൽ മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സ്ഥാനീയ (endemic) ഓർക്കിഡ് ജനുസ്സാണ് ഡൈയൂറിസ് (Diuris). 60 സ്പീഷീസുകൾ ഉള്ളതിൽ ഒന്നുമാത്രം ടിമോർ (Timor) ദീപിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.

കഴുതയുടെ മുഖം പോലിരിക്കുന്ന മഞ്ഞപ്പൂക്കളാണ് ഇവയ്ക്കെല്ലാം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത് എന്നതിനാൽ, പൊതുവെ ഇവയെ Donkey Orchids എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.

കഴുതച്ചെവികൾ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന വലിയ മേൽദളങ്ങൾ ആണ് ഈ പൂവിനെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമാക്കുന്നത്. കണ്ണുകളുടെയും വായുടെയും അടയാളങ്ങളുമായി കഴുതമുഖം പോലുള്ള കീഴ്ദളവും (lip), നെറ്റിയുടെ ആകൃതിയുള്ള മേൽവിദളവും (dorsal sepal) ചേർന്ന് അതിന്റെ സാദൃശ്യം ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുന്നു.

ചിലയിനങ്ങൾക്ക് (Diuris laevis) ആടുകളുമായി സാദൃശ്യം ഉള്ളതിനാൽ, അവയെ ആ പേരിലും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

Diuris is a genus of more than 60 species of terrestrial orchids, which are endemic to Australia, apart from one species which is endemic to Timor.

The flowers are usually yellow coloured with darker markings. The yellow dorsal sepal is shorter and forms a hood over the column. The long, green, narrow, lateral sepals hang like a pair of green tipped tails below the labellum. The petals are different from the sepals, having a narrow base with the main part widely expanded, in the form of donkey ears. The central labellum has three distinct parts with the central folded snout like part and the lateral parts arranged on either side of the column.

The common name “Donkey orchid” refers to the ear-like petals. The scientific name is derived from the Greek dis meaning ‘double’ and oura, ‘tail’, referring to the two narrow lateral sepals.
