Caleana major (Orchidaceae)

‘പറക്കുന്ന ഒരു താറാവിനെ‘ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് പുഷ്പമുണ്ട്. അറിയുമോ?

ആസ്ട്രേലിയയുടെ തെക്കു-കിഴക്കു ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ, യൂക്കാലിപ്റ്റസ് തോട്ടങ്ങളിലും, ചതുപ്പ് നിറഞ്ഞ തീരപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു കുഞ്ഞൻ സസ്യം ആണിത്.

ചുവപ്പു കലർന്ന ബ്രൗൺ നിറമുള്ള 4-5 പൂക്കളാണ് ഒരു പൂക്കുലയിൽ ഉണ്ടാവുക. വിദളങ്ങളിൽ (sepals) രണ്ടെണ്ണം വിടർന്ന ചിറകു പോലെയാണിരിക്കുന്നത്. ലൈംഗിക ഭാഗങ്ങളും (column), രണ്ടു ദളങ്ങളും, ഒരു വിദളവും ചേർന്നു ശരീരത്തിന്റെ രൂപം നൽകുന്നു. മേൽദളത്തിനു (labellum) നീണ്ട ഒരു കഴുത്തും, തലയുമുണ്ട്. അക്ഷരാർത്ഥത്തിൽ പറക്കുന്ന ഒരു താറാവ് തന്നെ..!!

തേൻ നുകരാനെത്തുന്ന Sawfly വിഭാഗത്തിൽ പെട്ട ആൺപ്രാണികൾ പെൺപ്രാണിയാണെന്ന് തെറ്റിദ്ധരിച്ച് പൂക്കളുമായി ഇണചേരാറുണ്ട് (pseudocopulation). തന്മൂലം ശരീരത്തിൽ ഒട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കുന്ന പൂമ്പൊടികളുമായി അവ അടുത്ത പുഷ്പം തേടി പൊയ്ക്കോളും.. കൗതുകകരം അല്ലേ..!!

Caleana major is a small terrestrial orchid found in eastern and southern Australia, growing in eucalyptus woodlands, coastal or swampy shrublands.

Racemes have upto 5 shiny reddish brown flowers, which resembles ducks in flight. The sepals and petals have pointed tips. The column has broad wings to which the dorsal sepal & petals almost touch and the lateral sepals turn back wing-like behind the flower. The labellum resembles the head of a duck on a strap-like “neck”. The flower is an attractant to insects, such as male sawflies which pollinate the flower in a process known as pseudocopulation.

It has been difficult to maintain this species in cultivation. They flower for one or two years only, but progressively weaken until they die.
