Dracula simia (Orchidaceae)

‘കുരങ്ങിന്റെ മുഖം’ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് പുഷ്പമുണ്ട് കേട്ടോ.. മരംകേറുന്ന കുരങ്ങിനെപ്പോലെ, മരത്തിൽ അധിവസിക്കുന്ന പുഷ്പം..!! നമുക്കൊന്നു പരിചയപ്പെട്ടാലോ..?

ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യമായ ഇക്വഡോറിലെ ആൻഡിസ് പർവ്വത മേഖലകളിലാണ് ഈ അധിജീവി (epiphyte) സസ്യം കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.

നീളമേറിയ വാലുകളുള്ള 3 വിദളങ്ങളാണ് (sepals) പൂവിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഭാഗം. രണ്ടു ചെറിയ ദളങ്ങൾ മുകളിൽ കണ്ണുകളെ പോലെയും, ലൈംഗിക ഭാഗങ്ങൾ (column) നീണ്ട് മൂക്ക് പോലെയുമിരിക്കുന്നു. മൊത്തത്തിൽ ഒരു കുരങ്ങിന്റെ മുഖം തന്നെ..!!  ‘കപൂചിൻ കുരങ്ങിനോടാണ്‘ കൂടുതൽ സാദൃശ്യം എന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.

പല ഇനങ്ങൾക്കും രക്തവർണ്ണത്തിലുള്ള പൂക്കളാണ് എന്നതിനാലാണ്,118 സ്പീഷീസുകൾ ഉള്ള ഡ്രാക്കുള എന്ന ഈ ജനുസ്സിനു ആ പേര് കിട്ടിയത്. പൊതുവേ എല്ലാറ്റിനും കുരങ്ങിന്റെ മുഖം തന്നെയാണ്. ഈ രൂപവൈചിത്ര്യം കാരണം, ഓർക്കിഡ് പ്രേമികളുടെ ഇടയിൽ വളരെയധികം ഡിമാൻഡുള്ള ഒരു പുഷ്പമാണിത് കേട്ടോ..!!

Dracula simia is an epiphytic orchid native to the tropical highland forests of Southeastern Ecuador.

The plant blooms at any season with several flowers on the inflorescence that open successively. Flowers are fragrant with the scent of a ripe orange. The tips of the sepals form long, slender tails. At the uppermost part, the 3 short petals have a warty texture which can give the appearance of two eyes along either side of the nose-like column which together resembles the face of a Capuchin monkey.

The genus which got its name Dracula, due to the rusty red color of several species now have around 118 species, many of which resemble monkeys.

The scientific name of Dracula simia pays homage to the blossom of this plant as it roughly translates to “little dragon monkey”. Draculas are very popular in hobbyist collections and many species and hybrids are now in cultivation.
