ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളായ വെനസ്വേലയിലെയും, കൊളംബിയയിലെയും മഴക്കാടുകളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു അധിജീവി (epiphyte) സസ്യമാണിത്. ചുവപ്പുകലർന്ന പർപ്പിൾ വരകളോടുകൂടിയ മഞ്ഞപ്പൂക്കളാണ് ഇവയ്ക്കുണ്ടാവുന്നത്.

മേൽ വിദളത്തിന്റെയും (dorsal sepal), രണ്ടു ദളങ്ങളുടെയും അറ്റങ്ങൾ ഉരുണ്ടാണിരിക്കുന്നത്. രണ്ടു വലിയ കീഴ് വിദളങ്ങൾ കൂടിച്ചേർന്ന് ഒരു തോണിയുടെ ആകൃതിയിലാണ്. പൂവിന്റെ ലൈംഗിക ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ദണ്ഡാണ് (column) താറാകൊക്കിന്റെ ആകൃതിയിൽ നീണ്ടുരുണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. അടിയിലായി കണ്ണുകളെ പോലെയിരിക്കുന്ന 2 കുത്തുകൾ ഈ സാമ്യത ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുന്നു.

Restrepia nittiorhyncha is a tiny epiphytic and rarely lithophytic orchids found in the rain forests of Venezuela and Colombia.

Flowers are yellow, borne on a slender peduncle, originating from the base of the back of the leaf. The long dorsal sepal is erect and ends in a somewhat thicker club-shaped tip. The yellow coloured lateral sepals are fused with contrasting reddish-purple spots or stripes. The long, 3 striped lateral petals also end in a thickened club-shaped tip. The long lip is ovoid and brownish towards its apex.

It is known as the ‘Duck Bill Orchid’ because of the bill shaped column, which bear the reproductive structures. This species is listed in CITES – Appendix II.
