Phalaenopsis lobbii (Orchidaceae)

അമേരിക്കയിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്ന സഞ്ചിമൃഗങ്ങളായ (marsupials) ഒപ്പോസങ്ങളെ (Opposum) കുറിച്ച് കേട്ടിട്ടില്ലേ? അവയുടെ രൂപമുള്ള ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് പുഷ്പം ഉണ്ട് കേട്ടോ. നമുക്കൊന്ന് പരിചയപ്പെടാം.

കിഴക്കൻ ഹിമാലയത്തിലും, ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ സംസ്ഥാനമായ സിക്കിമിലും, ഭൂട്ടാൻ, മ്യാന്മാർ, വിയറ്റ്നാം തുടങ്ങിയ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു അധിജീവി (epiphyte) സസ്യമാണിത്.

ഒരു മാസത്തോളം സമയം വിരിഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്നതും, നല്ല സുഗന്ധമുള്ളതുമായ മഞ്ഞയും വെളുപ്പും നിറമുള്ള പൂക്കളാണ് ഇവയ്ക്കുള്ളത്.

വിദളങ്ങൾക്ക് ദളങ്ങളേക്കാൾ വലുപ്പമുണ്ട്. കീഴ്ദളത്തിൽ വീതിയേറിയ രണ്ട് ബ്രൗൺ വരകൾ കാണാം. കോണാകൃതിയിൽ, രണ്ട് കണ്ണുകളോടെയുള്ള ലൈംഗിക ഭാഗങ്ങളും (column), വലിയ ചെവികളെ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന മേൽദളങ്ങളും, പൂവിന് ഒപ്പോസങ്ങളുടെ മുഖസാദൃശ്യം നൽകുന്നു..!!

Phalaenopsis lobbii is an epiphytic orchid found in the eastern Himalayas, north-eastern India, Bhutan, Sikkim, Myanmar and Vietnam. It is named in honour of Cornish plant hunter Thomas Lobb.

The strongly fragrant white flowers are borne sequentially in a few flowered racemes. Each flowers lasts about a month if kept cool, so several are open at a time. The sepals larger than the petals. The large white lip is marked with 2 wide, vertical brown bands. The conical shaped column with two eye like markings and the ear like dorsal petals resemble an Opossum, a marsupial found endemic to the Americas. Now several cultivated varieties of this species are available.
