Grammatophyllum speciosum (Orchidaceae)

25 അടി നീളവും, 2 ടണ്ണോളം ഭാരവും വെയ്ക്കുന്ന, ഗിന്നസ് റെക്കോർഡ് ബുക്കിൽ കയറിയ ‘ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഓർക്കിഡ് സസ്യത്തെ’ കുറിച്ച് കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ? കടുവാമുഖമുള്ള ഇതിനെ നമുക്കൊന്നു പരിചയപ്പെടേണ്ടേ?…

‘ഓർക്കിഡുകളിലെ രാജ്ഞി‘ എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ സസ്യം തെക്കുകിഴക്കേഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലും, ശാന്തസമുദ്രത്തിലെ സോളമൻ ദ്വീപുകളിലുമാണ് പ്രധാനമായും കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.

മരത്തിന്റെ മീതെയും, നിലത്തും കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവ ഭീമാകാരങ്ങളായ വലുപ്പങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വളരാറുണ്ട്. 1851ൽ ലണ്ടനിൽ നടന്ന ഒരു പ്രദർശനത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണ കേന്ദ്രം, രണ്ടു ടൺ ഭാരമുള്ള ഈ സസ്യമായിരുന്നു എന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു..!!

10 സെന്റീമീറ്ററോളം വ്യാസവും, 2 മാസത്തോളം ആയുസ്സുമുള്ള വലിയ മഞ്ഞപ്പൂക്കളിൽ നിറയെ കടുവകളുടേതു പോലുള്ള വരകളും, കുറികളും കാണാം. കീഴ്ദളവും (lip), ലൈംഗിക ഭാഗങ്ങളും (column) ചേർന്ന് വാ പൊളിച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്ന കടുവയുടെ പ്രതീതി നൽകുന്നു.

ഒരു മീറ്ററോളം നീളമുള്ള കരിമ്പിന്റേത് പോലെയുള്ള ഇലകൾ ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ ‘കരിമ്പ് ഓർക്കിഡ്‘ എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

അതിയായ വലുപ്പം കാരണം മിക്കവരും വളർത്താൻ മടിക്കുന്ന ഈ ഓർക്കിഡ്, തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ JNTBGRI ൽ വിരിഞ്ഞതായി 2020 ജൂലൈയിൽ ഒരു വാർത്തയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

Grammatophyllum speciosum, also called Queen of the Orchids, is an epiphytic/terrestrial orchid native to many South East Asian countries like New Guinea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Philippines upto the Solomon Islands.

It is listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s tallest orchid, with specimens recorded up to 25 feet in height that can grow to gigantic clusters weighing from several hundred kilograms to more than one ton..!! (An plant weighing 2 tons was one of the highlights in the 1851 exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London..!!).

Flowers are dimorphic (some are sterile). The fertile flowers which are 10 cm wide are yellow coloured with maroon or dark red spots, and with a wide open lip & column, altogether resembling the face of a Tiger. It may remain in bloom for up to 2 months. Because of its enormous size, it is rarely cultivated.
