Stanhopea embreei (Orchidaceae)

വെളുത്ത ആനകളെ പോലിരിക്കുന്ന പൂക്കളുമായി ഒരു ഓർക്കിഡ് സുന്ദരിയുണ്ട്.. അങ്ങ് ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കയിൽ..!! നമുക്കൊന്നു പരിചയപ്പെടേണ്ടേ?…

ദക്ഷിണ അമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളായ ഇക്വഡോർ, പെറു എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ആൻഡീസ് (Andes) പർവത മേഖലകളിൽ വളരുന്ന ഒരു അധിജീവി (epiphyte) സസ്യമാണിത്. രണ്ടോ മൂന്നോ ദിവസം മാത്രം ആയുസ്സുള്ള, സുഗന്ധമേറിയ വെളുത്ത പുഷ്പങ്ങളാണ് ഇവയ്ക്ക് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്.

ആനച്ചെവി പോലിരിക്കുന്ന വലിയ മേൽവിദളങ്ങളും (dorsal sepals), തുമ്പിക്കൈ പോലെ മെലിഞ്ഞു നീണ്ട കീഴ് വിദളവും, കണ്ണുകളുടെ സ്ഥാനത്ത് കറുത്ത പൊട്ടുകളുമായി, തലയുടെ രൂപമുള്ള മേൽദളങ്ങളും (dorsal petals) ചേർന്ന് മൊത്തത്തിൽ ഒരു വെള്ളാനയുടെ പ്രതീതി ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു..!!

മഞ്ഞയും വെള്ളയും നിറത്തിലുള്ള വലിയ കീഴ് വിദളത്തിനും രണ്ട് കണ്ണടയാളങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇവയുടെ പരാഗണത്തിനു സഹായിക്കുന്നത് ഒരിനം തേനീച്ചകൾ ആണ്..!! ഇവയുടെ വിവിധങ്ങളായ സങ്കരയിനങ്ങളും ഇന്ന് ലഭ്യമാണ് കേട്ടോ..!!

Stanhopea embreei is an epiphytic orchid native to moist cloud forests of the western Andes in Ecuador and Peru at the altitude of 500-1200 meters. It is named for Alvin Embree, an American orchidologist.

The highly fragrant flower lasts only for about three days, but several spikes are formed in each season. The flowers are primarily white, with large ear like lateral sepals, two small petals having brown eye spots, seen converged in front of the sepals, which look like the head of an Elephant, and a narrow dorsal sepal which look like the trunk of an Elephant. The winged column is arched above the lip. The lip has a bright yellow hypochile with an eye spot , two short horns and a spade shaped epichile.

The pollinators are male Euglossine bees, who collect the fragrance, not for food, but to attract female bees..!!
