Habenaria medusa (Orchidaceae)

ഒറ്റനോട്ടത്തിൽ അപ്പൂപ്പൻതാടി ആണോ എന്ന് സംശയം തോന്നിക്കുന്ന ഈ സസ്യം തെക്കു-കിഴക്കേഷ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലാണ് കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. 1892ൽ കണ്ടെത്തിയ ഈ സസ്യം ‘ശിശിരനിദ്രയ്ക്ക്’ (hibernation) വിധേയമാകുന്നു എന്നതൊരു അപൂർവ്വതയാണ്.

നേരിയ സുഗന്ധമുള്ള 10-20 വെളുത്ത പൂക്കളാണ് ഒരു പൂക്കുലയിൽ ഉണ്ടാവുക. വിദളങ്ങൾക്ക് പച്ചനിറമാണ്. അടിയിൽ ചുവപ്പ് കലർന്ന ബ്രൗൺ നിറമുള്ള കീഴ്ദളത്തിന്റെ ഇരുവശത്തുമുള്ള ഭാഗങ്ങൾ 36-40 നാരുകളായി പിരിഞ്ഞ് തൂവൽ പോലെ തോന്നിക്കുന്നു. പുറകിൽ കുഴലാകൃതിയിൽ ഒരു തേനറയും (spur) ഉണ്ട് കേട്ടോ..

ഗ്രീക്ക് പുരാണത്തിലെ, തലമുടിക്ക് പകരം വിഷപ്പാമ്പുകളുള്ള മെഡൂസ എന്ന രാക്ഷസിയുടെ തല പോലിരിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇതിന് ‘മെഡൂസ പോലുള്ള ഹാബനേറിയ’ എന്ന വിളിപ്പേരുണ്ട്. സ്പീഷീസ് നാമം ഉണ്ടായതും ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ് കേട്ടോ..!!

Habenaria medusa is a terrestrial orchid, endemic to Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Borneo, and also found occasionally in Laos and Vietnam.

This species identified by Kraenzlin in 1892 is considered as an unusual one, since it goes completely dormant over the winter. The inflorescence bears about 10-20 spidery white flowers having a nice light fragrance.

The sepals are green and the dorsal one is like a hood. Petals are united at base of the dorsal sepal. Labellum is trilobed with a reddish-brown spot at the base and the lateral lobes divided into 36-40 radially arranged filiform segments, looking like a feather. A long filiform nectar spur is also there.

It is also known as Medusa like Habenaria, because of the feathery labellum which resembles the hair of the Medusa, one of the three monstrous gorgons in the Greek mythology, who has living venomous snakes in place of hair.
